On Saturday May 18, a celebration for Paulus Berensohn’s 80th birthday was held at Penland School of Craft. Close to 200 people came from all over the USA. Penland School honored Paulus by creating a new trail to the top of Otter Mountain.Local master woodworker John Clarke and architect Alexander Ellenbogen have designed a meditation bench and shelter that will greet those who make the steady climb to the top. After cake, champagne and many moving tributes to Paulus,we screened “To Spring From the Hand” for the first time to his many friends and colleagues. The response was very moving. The film will be screened again at the Asheville Fine Arts Theatre this Thursday May 24. Tickets are available at their website, with a donation to Penland School being suggested. This photograph of Paulus shows him holding an unfired pot he made over the past week to bury, or as he would say “return it to the earth” at the foot of the new trail. It something he has done for many years, particularly on Earth Day.
